AP US History Information

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are developed by The College Board. AP classes are designed to give you access to college level content and instruction. Enrollment in an AP course shows that you are ready to accept the challenge of reading more complex texts, spending a greater amount of time studying outside the classroom and writing with more style and specificity than in courses offered in the general high school curriculum. Your reward for this effort is the opportunity to earn college credit or course placement advantages by taking and passing the AP Exam at the end of the course. College admissions offices consider superior scores on the AP Exam to be a good measure of student commitment to academic achievement.

*The College Board has administered changes to the AP US History exam for 2014-2015 (last year), and has therefore mandated changes to the AP US History course, specifically how it is taught and structured. These changes reflect a higher regard for “historical thinking skills” as well as a greater focus on thematic learning objectives. Developing historical thinking skills is a necessary component. You will also learn to develop and support historical arguments, use chronology to track continuity and change between and within major time periods and to place historical events in context. The new AP exam will measure proficiency in the historical thinking skills as well as the thematic learning objectives.
